What are the requirements for getting married in Georgia, and how can one register a marriage in this country?

Many foreign couples choose Georgia—the land of sun, sea, mountains, vineyards, and hospitality—for their wedding. To ensure your family’s “birthday” is perfect, you need an experienced wedding planner. Lotus Wedding Agency offers services to organize a vibrant, emotional, and magical wedding. We take away the hassle and bustle, allowing you to enjoy incredible emotions and celebrate your happy event. Our team also handles all the legal aspects of your marriage.
According to Georgian law:
- An official marriage is concluded between a man and a woman by mutual consent.
- Marriage is not available for same-sex couples and is not recognized for registration in other states.
- Religious marriage certificates have no legal force.
- Official registration requires the presence of two witnesses.
- Marriage is only conducted for adults (18+).
- Property acquired during marriage is joint (except for property owned before the wedding, gifts, or inheritance).
- Georgian law permits divorce.
Marriage in Georgia is NOT possible in the following cases:
Close blood relatives (siblings and cousins), or adopters and the adopted cannot officially marry. Minors under 18 will not be recognized as husband and wife. Legally incapacitated persons are also unable to marry. Marriage is impossible for partners where one is the ward of the other without a prenuptial agreement. Registration will be denied to foreigners staying in the country illegally. A couple will not be registered if one partner has an existing active marriage with another person.

The marriage procedure in Georgia
Citizens of any country can legalize their relationship under Georgian law without restrictions. To marry, the couple must file an application at a chosen Public Service Hall (House of Justice) or another authorized legal body. The application includes the organizer’s contact number. Within one working day, officials will send a message regarding the application’s review. The wedding organizer will inform you of the registration time (if without a ceremony) or confirm the previously selected date and time. The procedure is conducted by staff at the House of Justice or Wedding Palace. Off-site (outdoor) ceremonies are also available.
List of required documents
To marry, the organizer and the couple submit a written marriage application. Valid international passports with Georgian translations are required, and their authenticity must be notarized. If either partner was previously married, translated and notarized divorce certificates or death certificates of the former spouse must be provided. Witnesses’ passports are processed in the same way. Entrust this bureaucratic work to our agency. We always provide witnesses, but if you wish to have your own, we will prepare their documents for registration.
Advice from the founder of Lotus Wedding
I have been organizing weddings for many years and know how difficult it is for unprepared people to handle the legal side without professional help. Only 25–35% of such couples successfully complete the bureaucratic process on their own. Beyond a beautiful wedding, couples want their marriage to be official and recognized in their home country.
If you decide to handle the documents yourself, you must know the nuances of legal and bureaucratic aspects. Errors in paperwork lead to sad consequences: denial of registration or problems legalizing the marriage in your homeland. Many couples turn to us after making mistakes that cost them time and money. Our consultations are free. Contact us to decide: will you risk it alone or trust the professionals? We guarantee that with us, your marriage will be valid internationally.

Legal aspects: PR and citizenship in Georgia
Georgian law allows citizens to form families with foreigners, which speeds up certain migration issues. Upon concluding a valid marriage, the spouse receives a Permanent Residence (PR) permit. For those living permanently in Georgia, there is a simplified procedure for obtaining citizenship.
| Criterion | Georgia | UAE | Germany |
|---|---|---|---|
| Legal paperwork | Minimal documents, no residency requirement, fast and simple process | More documents and formalities, new laws still involve bureaucracy | Extensive list of documents, translations, permits often required |
| Processing time | Civil marriage can be completed in 1–2 days, often within 24 hours | Procedures can take longer due to local regulations and approvals | Preparation and approval may take weeks or months |
| Visa and entry rules | Visa‑free or easy entry for citizens of 90+ countries | Many nationalities need visas or residence permits | Schengen visas required for many guests, stricter entry rules |
| Wedding cost (basic) | Basic civil registration from about 350–420 USD, packages from ~390 USD | Overall higher prices for venues and services due to premium market | Generally higher average costs for venues and services than Georgia |
| Wedding packages | Multiple affordable packages, including full service and legalization support | Packages usually more expensive, especially in popular emirates | Packages available but often at European price levels |
| Scenery and locations | Mountains, vineyards, Black Sea coast, historic cities in one country | Mainly desert, seafront and city skylines | Castles, cities, countryside, but with stricter rules and higher prices |
| Ceremony flexibility | Easy to combine civil, symbolic, and religious ceremonies | More limitations related to religion and local laws | More regulated formats and procedures for ceremonies |
| Bureaucracy level | Very low, often described as almost “unbureaucratic” | Medium to high, especially for mixed‑nationality couples | High, with detailed checks and official requirements |
| Recognition of marriage | Certificates can be legalized and recognized in many countries | Recognition possible but may require extra steps and attestations | Direct recognition for residents but often complex for binational couples |
| Travel convenience | Short flights from Europe and Middle East, budget airlines available | Convenient mainly for GCC and some international hubs | Convenient for EU residents, longer and more expensive for others |
| Guest experience | Warm hospitality, wine, cuisine, and authentic local culture | Luxurious but more formal and expensive guest experience | Classic European experience, but higher prices and stricter rules |
| Climate | Mild climate with options for all seasons in different regions | Very hot summers, comfortable mainly in cooler months | Cooler climate, limited outdoor season in many regions |
| Language and support | Many agencies offer full English‑language planning and legalization help | English widely spoken, but legal processes can still be complex | German bureaucracy; often requires translators and certified documents |
| Ideal for foreign couples | Designed to be foreigner‑friendly, quick, cheap, and romantic | Good for residents but still demanding for mixed‑nationality couples | Good mainly if one partner is German or resident, more complex otherwise |
